Ableton Live 10.1 Compatibility Instructions

As of the release of Max 8.0.6 from Cycling '74, compatibility issues with the Liquid Music Max for Live Device (AMXD) and Ableton Live Suite 10.1 are now resolved.

Specific instructions on how to configure Ableton to use an external Max installation for each platform (macOS and Windows) follow below.

You will not require an additional external Max license for this fix to work (that is, to change the Ableton Max environment to use an external version of Max). You will be able to use Max 8.0.6 within Live in the same manner as the bundled version of Max, but if you run Max 8.0.6 outside of Live, you will not be able to save any Max files you create (unless you have a Max license). Check out this article from Ableton for more information.

macOS

1. Ensure Ableton Live Suite 10.1 is closed.

2. Visit Cycling '74 and download Max 8.0.6.

3. Install Max 8.0.6 by opening the .dmg and dragging the Max app into the Applications directory.

4. Launch Ableton Live Suite 10.1, and open the Preferences window. Navigate to the "File Folder" tab, and click "Browse" on the "Max Application" setting:

5. A dialog will open, allowing you to select an external installation of Max. Navigate to the Applications directory and select the Max 8.0.6 app you installed in Step 3:

6. Press "Open", and Ableton Live will notify you that the active version of Max will use this external version upon the next launch of Live. When you re-launch, you should see the following in the Preferences window:

7. If you are still having difficulty launching the Liquid Music AMXD after installing Max 8.0.6 and configuring Live 10.1 to use Max 8.0.6, try to reinstall Liquid Music 1.6.4. Reinstallation of Liquid Music will not be necessary in all cases, but if you are not working after reconfiguring, the reinstall should clean up any lingering issues.

Windows

1. Ensure Ableton Live Suite 10.1 is closed.

2. Visit Cycling '74 and download Max 8.0.6.

3. Install Max 8.0.6 by unzipping and running the installer executable.

4. Launch Ableton Live Suite 10.1, and open the Preferences window. Navigate to the "File Folder" tab, and click "Browse" on the "Max Application" setting:
